Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.

This morning, as I was preparing my breakfast, I overhead some spoken words on the television which initially inspired me….until they got to the part about selling vehicles. Being a curious soul, I couldn’t help wondering if the first part of the message was intended to amplify an important message, or to simply reel in those whose emotions would be affected by hearing such language. Whatever the case, I was immediately reminded of the above quote, which is true and many of us believe. It is, indeed prescient.
We could learn a lot from our brothers and sisters whose knowledge of the natural world guided their ancestors long before the shores of what is now the US were invaded, and they subsequently became the marginalized…mistreated and maligned. They are a part of the population in the US who are disproportionately affected by the current pandemic…sadly not surprising given the way they’ve been treated for hundreds of years in this country (probably in other nations as well). They are part of the fabric, in the web of life, just as you and I are. Persons of color are disproportionately affected in this country, in general. This situation is, in part, what is being uncovered in this upside down time we are living in.
Please open your eyes…see what has been hidden intentionally by others or we have chosen – consciously or unconsciously – to turn away from. This is the time to SEE.
Returning to the topic at hand, our oneness, I offer the following to raise our level of awareness to this truth. That which we turn away from will not not exist because we choose not to see it. When you consider that we are each one thread within the web of life, every choice we make, every thought we think, every prayer or meditation we offer, can make a powerful contribution to the whole.
Let us all SEE what has become visible around and on the planet without so much ongoing unconscious, exploitation of her resources. The fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day is an opportunity to respond to the clarion call to care for our Mother Earth in ways that we may not have until this point. To the scientists and activists who continue to keep the reality of this visible, I offer a bow of gratitude.
Finally, I received an email in my inbox this morning very fitting of this reality of oneness. In part, it reads…
…all that Life asks is that you move through Life with a reverence for Life.
Yet this reverence for Life must be displayed in all things.
Even in the littlest things. Perhaps especially so.
For instance, if you choose to consume animals,
do you limit your purchases of flesh to cook
to only those suppliers who treat animals humanely?
Do you even know who those suppliers are?
Does this matter to you?
How you treat other Life Forms does matter.
It says something about how you want Life to be.
You see, we are creating all of this. All of this.
We ARE one. We are ALL affected by what is happening in our world right now. We will ALL be affected by the choices, thoughts and actions of each individual on the planet.
My our kindness; our loving, open hearted thoughts and actions make the contributions to the web to support ALL beings.
All things share the same breath – the beast, the tree, the man… the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports.
